The Provost’s Office accepts applications each fall for Junior Faculty Development awards funded by IBM and R.J. Reynolds Industries Inc.
- Are you an untenured assistant or associate professor looking for support for a research or scholarly project? Each year, the Provost’s Office hosts a competition for $10,000 Junior Faculty Development Awards with funds provided by IBM and R.J. Reynolds Industries, Inc. These awards are to be expended during the period beginning January 1, 2024 and ending December 31, 2024.
- The deadline to apply for Junior Faculty Development Awards for Calendar Year 2024 is Friday October 13, 2023.

Senior Faculty Research and Scholarly Leaves

The Nannerl O. Keohane Distinguished Visiting Professorship
The Keohane Professorship brings prominent faculty to serve as visiting professors at UNC and Duke for a one-year period, during which they deliver a lecture series and engage students and faculty around areas of shared interest to both institutions. Ultimately, the program is designed to energize new scholarly connections between Duke and UNC.
In 2023-2024, We are pleased to welcome Brett Ashley Kaplan, Ph.D., University of Illinois.
Professor Kaplan will visit Carolina and Duke campuses three times this academic year to give community lectures, academic seminars, visit classrooms, and meet with undergraduates, grad students and faculty at both campuses. This program is sponsored by the provost offices at both campuses, and in collaboration with the Duke Center for Jewish Studies and the Carolina Center for Jewish Studies.

This award honors faculty whose proposals best embody the humanities and/or social sciences methods or approaches that directly and positively impact constituencies outside the University.
