University Professor of Distinguished Teaching
Origin of the Award
Two three-year term professorships with a stipend of $3,000 per year have been established to recognize career-long excellence in teaching. One will be for tenured faculty in Academic Affairs (including professional schools) and one for tenured faculty in Health Affairs.
The next University Professor of Distinguished Teaching will
be awarded in 2010. NOMINATION
FORM
Eligibility
- Any faculty member who is tenured at UNC-Chapel Hill and has taught here for at least seven years is eligible. This includes faculty members in Academic Affairs, Health Affairs and professional schools.
- Recipients must have demonstrated exceptional ability over their career in the teaching of graduate, professional and/or undergraduate students.
- Individuals who have received this award within the last five years
are not eligible. Check the list of previous winners.
- Any faculty member, who is currently holding a chaired professorship, either in Academic Affairs or Health Affairs, is ineligible to be considered for University Professor of Distinguished Teaching.
Selection procedure
The committee will screen nominations and select several finalists, who will be asked to submit a portfolio for review. The portfolio will include, but not be limited to, the following:
- A brief written statement articulating the nominee's teaching philosophy and methods used to achieve educational goals. The statement may include contributions the nominee has made to the intellectual environment at UNC-Chapel Hill and any special or innovative methods he or she employs.
- Copies of syllabi and other relevant course materials from three recent courses the nominee has taught and samples of materials from other teaching and learning activities.
- A summary of student ratings of courses and other educational experiences that have been evaluated in the previous two years.
- Copies of any peer teaching observations.
- A current curriculum vitae.
- Names of two or three colleagues and up to five former students of the nominee from whom the selection committee may request evaluations. Nominees will also be asked to provide class rolls so current students may be contacted.
The committee may also collect additional data or materials about the nominees' teaching, including videotapes, classroom observation by committee members, and telephone interviews with alumni and current students. The committee will forward its recommendation to the Chancellor.
